To tell the truth, I never really intended to write this cookbook…
The Ideal Cook is a collaboration between The Ideal Press and newly graduated artist & writer, Ruth Pilston.
Looking at the work, writing and visual language of Nigella Lawson — who is often considered, somewhat satirically, to be something of an ‘Ideal Cook’ — Pilston explores our entanglement with an emerging consumer culture; one that feeds into ‘#foodporn’ Instagram posts and ‘100 mile diets.’
By asking the question: What if Nigella Lawson agreed to write a cook-book that contained only re-workings of classic Heinz recipes — the author satirically draws on contemporary ideas of virtue signalling, gentrification and consumerism. This cookbook then (besides containing a set of delicious recipes) seeks to offer a self-reflexive, semi-fictional manifestation of a newly emerging cultural position.
